until Sept. 11 was filled with palm trees
and a bustling shopping center.
"It was all -flattened, he said. "It's
just horrible to believe."
For other Holocaust survivors, the
shock and trauma of the massive terror
attacks in the United States — a place
they viewed as uniquely safe — may
also be reawakening long-dormant
childhood memories and emotions. But
not all survivors are reporting special
cies
problems, and several Jewish agen
say they've been surprised by the level
of resilience among this population.
Elihu Kover, vice president for social
services of Selthelp Community
Services, Inc., which provides home
care, housing and community-based
social services to 2,000 survivors of Nazi
persecution, said his group is hearing
contradictory things from clients.
Some are feelinc, anxious and afraid
to leave their homes. Others seem rela-
tively unaffected or say the Sept. 11
attacks — which occurred during just
one terrible day — are not as bad as
the Holocaust, a persecution that con-
tinued over a period of years.
David Stern, of New York's Jewish
Association for Services for the Aged,
said, "At this point, very few
Holocaust survivors are openly
expressing fears or concerns," although
there have been a few cases of people
"whose memories of the past have
been reawakened by the events.
"I think we'll begin to see among
Holocaust survivors some reawakened
fears, but were not seeing it yet," he said,
noting that the Jewish holidays — and
the family gatherings that come with it
— may be postponing the trauma.

Aftershocks

Impeccably dressed in a stylish wool
jacket and matching black pants,
Gompertz looks at least a decade
younger than his 77 years. But he still
is feeling disoriented, tired and unable
to concentrate, overwhelmed by even
minor decisions.
Kristallnacht "was a totally different
experiencc, but maybe it prepared me
for such a shock," Gompertz says, his
English still bearing traces of a
German accent.
"I was more hurt than angry then,"
he says. "When you're small, you see it
differently. You're not totally conscious
of what's going on." Now, he says, his
main emotion is anger at "these stu-
pid, idiot, bastard terrorists."
"They destroyed my neighborhood,"
he says. "It was the best place to live in
Manhattan. Now, even if they rebuild
it, it will never be the same."
