Kingsley's God and Abraham and
Leonard Bernstein's Dybbuk Suite.
Immensely proud of the musical pro-
gramming at Temple Israel, Cantor
Orbach has lectured on the subject at
both the (Reform) American
Conference of Cantors and the
(Conservative) Cantors Assembly. "We
perform 12 concerts a year, from cham-
ber music to performances of orchestras
and chorus," he says.
Temple Israel has been the debut site
of operas and other concerts of music
commissioned by Temple Israel.
He has served as the leading tenor of
the American Savoyards, the only
Equity Gilbert and Sullivan company in
the U.S., and has been the leading tenor
of the Troy-based Piccolo Opera
Company for more than 30 years,
singing roles in operas such as The
Barber of Seville and Carmen.

Significant among the tributes
bestowed on Cantor Orbach through
the years have been those involving
Israel.
"I cannot possibly describe my joy
when I had the privilege of singing in
three symphony concerts during Israel's
25th anniversary celebration when I was
awarded the Culture Medal of Israel
presented by Golda Meir," he says.
"To subsequently be asked to sing
there for its 50th anniversary and to join
the state in celebration of the 3,000th
year since Jerusalem was founded were
among the highlights of my career."
He also holds the Shliach Tzibor award
of the American Conference of Cantors,
where he is a past president.
The cantor's involvement in the
Jewish community has taken him to
various programs and events.
"His work includes numerous annual
concerts for seniors, trips to Camp
Tamarack and Michigan Federation of
Temple Youth events," Norton Stern says.
"His cooperative ventures with Hadassah,
B'nai B'rith, Holocaust Memorial Center,
Jewish Community Center and the
Zionist Organization of America have led
to a special commendation from the
Jewish Community Council."

Family Life

During the 10th year of their marriage,
Cantor Harold and Evelyn Orbach
brought their family to Detroit.
Now, even with four kids living in
various cities and two demanding
careers, the Orbachs remain family
focused.
"We're a very close family," says
