vercoming a near disastrous
water main break in its
newly renovated quarters on
Third Street in Detroit's
north Cass Corridor, the Walk &
Squawk Performance Project, one of
the Detroit area's most unique theater
groups, will "walk and squawk" again
this season with a new round of plays,
classes and workshops.
The group will launch the season
with an unusual play called Bodyland,
opening Thursday, Oct. 11, and run-
ning through Sunday, Nov. 11, at the
Furniture Factory. The production
takes a look at new science and the
human body, exploring the world of
organ transplants, biotechnology and
physical identity through a family-
operated organ and appendage
exchange.
"It's a little bit vaudeville, a little bit
Frankenstein — and a little bit weird,"
explained Bodythnds playwright, Erika
Block of Ann Arbor, who shares the
title of Walk & Squawk's artistic
director with Hilary
Ramsden of England.
It's also typical
of the fare
offered by
the troupe
since it

was established in 1995, acquiring an
ensemble of performers and teachers.
Ramsden continues to act in the
group's plays, and Block sticks to
directing.
"We create physical and visual the-
ater, which emphasizes imagination,
collaborative development and ensem-
ble work, integrating images, spoken
text and movement," Block said. "The
key words are movement and text ...
hence Walk & Squawk."
The troupe used Ann Arbor venues
before moving in 1999 into the old
Weber Furniture Factory Showroom
— built in 1923 but unused since the
1970s — "to be in an area with the
most people," said Block.
The neighborhood, with a diverse
environment, is being revitalized with
new lofts, apartments and other build-
ings. Plus, it's close to Wayne State
University and Orchestra Hall.
With grants from foundations and
donations by corporations and indi-
viduals, the building underwent a
$650,000 renovation, providing
15,000 square feet for the theater,
rehearsal space, offices and a gallery.
Seating varies from 100 to 1 50
depending on each show.
There's also room for
expansion, possibly
adding shops
and a cafe
next year. A
paved,
fenced and
lighted
parking lot
adjoins the
building.
