Jessy's father, Matt Hodges, is a manufactur- er's representative for outdoor goods such as Jansport, widely known for its backpack line. Jessy, who celebrated her bat mitz- vah at Workmen's Circle in Oak Park, joined 500 other teens who called the number in the ad and followed up with applications, questionnaires and telephone interviews. She made the final cut in January — one of only eight selected from around the nation — after her mother took her to the airport to meet with a cast- ing agent who had flown in for the last interview. Then came the hard part for her mother and father. Because Jessy is not old enough to sign a contract on her own, her parents were sent a thick wad of legal papers, filled with waivers that informed them of all the dangers and negative consequences that might befall their daughter in a tropical rain forest. "Reading all that was the only time I thought maybe we shouldn't do this," Sandweiss-Hodges said. "They listed all of the possible things that could happen in a situation like that. They listed them all in gory detail." Hodges convinced her teachers to allow her to miss a week and a half of school to participate in the taping of the show, telling them that the experi- ence was sure to be an educational event. While her friends relaxed during their snowy break in mid-February, Hodges flew from Detroit to Texas, where she met the other participants. They flew together to Costa Rica, where they also spent time doing community service projects with local families. "We stayed in their houses, which were really just floors with roofs. There were no walls. We ate all of our meals with them, which was all beans and rice. That is all they eat for break- fast, lunch and dinner. We helped with the chores, using a machete and picking beans," she said, adding that the experience changed her. "I began to realize that some of the things I thought were necessities were really not that important." For exam- ple: TV. "We didn't watch television the whole time. Since I have been back, it just doesn't interest me anymore." Hodges said that while she values the trip for the experience it gave her, she hopes that it also is a springboard for a career in acting or singing. This fall, the sophomore hopes to earn a part in Berkley's fall musical, Hello, Dolly! She spent part of the summer hon- ing her talents as part of a musical the- ater troupe studying drama and voice at the Interlochen Arts Camp in northern Michigan. "The camping setting is much cozier there," said her mother, laughing.
