Hodges, 15, was in Costa Rica in February to shoot the Discovery Kids Channel's Outward Bound, a reality adventure series whose latest episodes debut tonight on the cable channel. The series documents the actual experiences the teens encountered, interspersed with interviews with each participant. During the rwo-week rain-forest adventure, the teens spent time chal- lenging themselves with whitewater rafting, hiking, surfing and living off the land. Part of the experience was a solo personal challenge that lasted an entire day. Participants had to spend the time alone in the jungle in a predetermined area. Hodges' space was a dirt patch, located near non-leafy indigenous trees. Without supplies like flashlights or camping gear, she arrived in the early evening, mentally prepared to spend the day alone. "It was about 9 o'clock and I thought, 'Why don't I get to sleep early?"' she said. "I slept well, but I woke up when it was still dark out- side. I tried to get back to sleep, but I woke up like every 15 minutes. I did- n't get a whole lot of sleep that night." And the daytime hours weren't much better. It was then that thoughts drifted to the importance of shelter. When the warmth of the sun replaced the cooler evening air, it was comfort- ing. However, the mid-day sun was almost too much to bear. "I couldn't get out of the sun. The trees around me weren't very leafy so they didn't help. Finally, I found a large leaf that had fallen from a tree and I used that to block the sun," she said. Hodges' journey actually began on a chilly December day when her moth- er, Ellen Sandweiss- Hodges, noticed an - advertisement for auditions for the show in a local newspaper. "I saw the notice that said they were looking for 14- and 15-vear-olds with out- door experience for an adventure show. I thought Jessy might be interested," said Sandweiss-Hodges, adding that the family, including Jessy's 11- Jessy Hodges, at home in Huntington Woods, was one of eight participants chosen from applicants across the country to participate in the Costa Rican episodes of "Outward Bound."
