S

ince October is breast cancer awareness
month, our cover story "In Their Own
Words," introduces you to five inspiring
women in our community who con-
quered this deadly disease. They are compas-
sionate, courageous women. They represent
our grandmothers, mothers, daughters and
friends.
Although we interviewed
each cancer survivor separately,
a common thread emerges in
the stories. We learn from these
warriors that life is precious,
and relationships with family
and friends are paramount. Our
breast cancer survivors show us
the resilience of the human
.
spirit.
According to the Breast
Cancer Research Foundation
based in New York, approxi-
mately 180,000 new cases are diagnosed every
year, and battling cancer is a long and difficult
struggle. With the recent terrorist acts we now
have another war to conquer. As we begin the
New Year, I hope we can eliminate all the evil
cells throughout the world.

Sincerely,
