Persevere, Prevail

A statement from U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, D-
Mich., read at Sunday's memorial service and solidarity rally by Lawrence Jackier,
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit president:
"Today, both in grief and determination, America stands as one. With each
passing day, since these senseless acts of terror struck our nation, we have seen
that the peace-loving people of the world stand with
us. We stand with those lost in the ruins. We stand
with the families and friends who love them. And we
stand for the values that define us as Americans —
our love of liberty and our respect for all peoples.
"Those who inflicted this horror upon America
sought to destroy more than structures and lives; they

sought to destroy the American spirit. They sought to
weaken us, but they have only made us stringer.
"Through our pain and anger, we have pulled together as one people,
drawn from every ethnic heritage on earth and determined to overcome the
horror of terror with countless acts of humanity. In so doing, we are renewing
the very meaning of America. We recommit ourselves to join with others to
seek out and defeat a common enemy of the civilized world. We resolve to
persevere and, ultimately, to prevail."
