In Ann Arbor, at least one in the
match has to be over age 55. In
Detroit, at least one has to be Jewish.

You Can Go Home Again

When Mike Root, 56, first heard about
HomeShare from his brother, he was
totally against it. Root has a congenital
brain tumor and recently became
wheelchair bound. Now that he's part
of the program, he's an advocate.
"People think of HomeShare as a
loss of independence," says Root, who
works on the program's newsletter and
has made posters about
HomeShare for public
buses. "But it gives me the
ability to do more things."
It upsets him to meet
people who should know
about the program but
don't, he says, referring to
times when he's been in St.
Joseph's hospital in Ann
Arbor for rehabilitation.
"Some of the disabled
patients are in distress
because they can't go
home," he says. "But if they
had help [through HomeShare], they
wouldn't have to give up their homes."
"What's important," says Frey, is to
have an open mind. Go in without
expectations and let it happen. I was
alone for many years and I didn't like
to go home. This makes a lot of differ-
ence. I want to come home now." ❑

one of the first HomeShare programs
after conducting workshops for seniors
in Ann Arbor. "Every other person was
worried about housing," she says.
Axelrod still volunteers for the pro-
gram, which is currently funded by the
city of Ann Arbor, the University of
Michigan Hospital and federal pro-
grams.
"To match people," director Arps
says, "is a challenge."
Ann Arbor has an application
process, and they check references on
both sides, Eizen says. Detroit will do
the same.
"But HomeShare is not for
everyone," Arps says.
She once had a woman
who couldn't imagine seeing a
person sitting on her sofa in
shorts or dirtying her living
room.
"You need hope in this
matchmaking business," she
adds.
Rossinger had four other
matches over as many years
before she wound up with
Frey. Their comfortable
blend of humor, seriousness
and care helps them succeed.
"Communication is most impor-
tant," Rossinger says. "But we don't pry
into each other's personal lives."
"We don't need to," quips Frey,
alluding to their close quarters.
As they talk, Frey's grandson Skyler
McDowell, 10, of Whitmore Lake,
who is visiting for a couple days, serves
ice tea and cookies.
"She's like the mother I didn't have
... Lillian's the most unselfish person
I've ever met."
"I'm very lucky," Rossinger says.
Currently, Arps has 30 matches.
Some providers join the program for
financial support, security, or for help
with certain chores in exchange for a
low rent. "But we emphasize it's home
