Heartland SPEAKERS: ** 111111MII Jewish Customs HOME HEALTH CARE & HOSPICE ed loss of innocent lives. There is no moral equivalency of these two actions. The result of horrible terrorist attacks are the great loss of life in America and in Israel. More than 6,000 Americans were killed and thousands of their family and friends bear the ongoing suffering. In Israel, more than 170 have been killed in the last year, which is huge when one considers that the population of the United States is 50 times that of Israel. This senseless killing must be stopped now by all reasonable means at our disposal. The core issue for America and Israel is the response to terrorism. As has been said by our government, many analysts and others, it will take a long time to destroy terrorism and it must be done in coalition with other countries. We can't do it alone because there are active terrorist groups in well over 50 countries, and unless you get all of them, they will regenerate. Whether or not the world is ready to join in a long-term attack on terrorism remains to be seen, but at least they all should now understand that it is in their own interest. No one is safe from global terrorism — not Jews, not Christians and not even moderate Muslims. Coalition Goals America developed an initiative Solidarity Nov — that allowed all Jews and people of good will to par- ticipate in programs in support of Israel. The opportunities to support Israel are: subsidized missions to Israel; rallies organized by local fed- erations throughout America; educa- tional programs on the real facts in Israel for students, our Jewish and general community, media and gov- ernment; and finally, a fund-raising effort to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for those affected by the intifada. UJC also recognized and assumed their responsibility to develop a response for our community to the cruel and vicious attack on America. All national Jewish organizations and the various religious streams joined in this effort, perhaps the first time these disparate groups worked in uni- son. The various elements in this developing plan are to evaluate and recommend security programs and systems for the Jewish and general It appears that the strategy of the consortium would be to destroy the terrorist leaders in the short term and then eradicate the other groups over time. Much like the dreaded and deadly disease of cancer, first you kill the source, then you bring many therapies and proto- cols to kill the remaining bad cells, knowing that some innocent healthy cells will be killed in the process. Even after the cure, we must remain vigilant to a reoccurrence because, if found, it must be treated immediately. In this worldwide response to ter- rorism, we, as Americans and as Jews, cannot be mere observers or commentators; we must be partici- pants. It is clearly a responsibility and an obligation of every fortunate citizen in a democracy to take mean- ingful action. As the leading American Jewish organization, the United Jewish Communities (UJC) and its mem- ber federations throughout North community, to form a clear message of current events for the Jewish community and media, to advocate anti-terrorist and anti-discrimina- tion legislation with likeminded organizations, and to implement a financial plan for humanitarian aid to the victims of tragedy. In order for me to retain my per- spective and reason in such a horren- dous period in our contemporary world, I return to my love of America and love of Israel. If there is any sanity left, it is found in the paramount value of Judaism and of our great American democracy — family. It is our strength and the real significance of life. So it is with this thought during a difficult time that we should give a little tighter hug, a tender kiss and "I love you" to all those we hold dear. ❑ DAVID TECHNER Director of Ira Kaufman Chapel Presents: Coping with Grief, Loss and End of Life Care: A Jewish Perspective Hospice and the Jewish Patient RABBI BUNNY FREEDMAN Director of Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network A Seminar for Health Care Providers Jewish Community Resources WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 17, 2001 NORM KEANE Executive Director of Jewish Family Services 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Heartland Hospice Jewish Program In partnership with: Ira Kaufman Chapel RITA WINER Jewish Hospice Coordinator Rabbi Yerachmiel Rabin Heartland Hospice Chaplain Marvin & Betty Danto Family Health Care Center Hebrew Memorial Chapel Speakers Panel Discussion Birmingham Maple Clinic Op LeMne INSTITUTE ON AGING 111 Facilitated by : BARBARA HADDAD Program Director of Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network FEISCHMAN RESIDENCE/ BLUMBERG PLAZA 6710 West Maple Rd.
