To Be Studied

Jerusalem/JTA
Engineers, arche-
ologists and rabbis plan to survey
the sturdiness of the \Western Wall,
according to the Jerusalem Post.
The move comes after a stone the
size of a fist tumbled down on a
Jewish worshiper last Friday.

Ceremony Marks
Babi Yar Massacre

Kiev/JTA — Ukrainian leaders
attended a ceremony commemorat-
ing the thousands of people massa-
cred by Nazi troops at Babi Yar.
President Leonid Kuchma was
among the government officials at
Sunday's ceremony, during which
the cornerstone for a Jewish heritage
center sponsored by the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
was unveiled.
On Sept. 29 and Sept. 30, 1941,
more than 33,700 Jews were killed
by German forces and local collabo-
rators, their bodies thrown into an
open ravine. At least 100,000 peo-
ple, both Jews and non-Jews, were
killed there during the war.

New York/JTA — More than 75 per-
cent of Americans feel Israel should
adopt a low profile and reach out to
the Palestinians if this could help the
United States gain support from
Arab and Muslim groups for its
coalition against terrorism, according
to a new poll.
The Harris Poll found 40 percent
believe such a stance is "very impor-
tant," and another 37 percent say it
is "somewhat important."
