IRP Offers Detroit
Lecture Series

"Detroit at its Tricentennial" will be the
focus of the fall lecture program offered
by the Institute for Retired
Professionals. The program will be held
Five consecutive Fridays, beginning Oct.
5, at the Jewish Community Center in
Oak Park.
The morning sessions, which deal
with "forces that Shaped Detroit —
and a Look at the Future," will run
from 10:30 a.m.-noon. The afternoon
sessions, 1-2:30 p.m., will discuss
"Detroit: Art, Music and Theater."
There is no charge for the program.
Irwin Cohen will open the morning
sessions on Oct. 5 with a slide presenta-
tion based on his book Echoes of
Detroit: A 300-Year History. On Oct.
12, David Gad-Harf, executive director
of the Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, will speak on
"Ethnic Detroit: New Groups, New
Relationships." Dr. Michael Yokum,
director of learning services, Oakland
Schools, speaks on Oct. 19; Douglas
Fraser, past international president,
United Automobile Workers, speaks on
Oct. 26; and Dr. David Fasenfest,
director, Center for Urban Studies,
Wayne State University, speaks Nov. 2.
Jim Tottis, curator of American art,
Detroit Institute of Arts, will open the
afternoon series on Oct. 5 with "150
Years of Architecture and Innovation."
Ursula Walker, vocalist, and Buddy
Budson, pianist and composer, will
present a jazz program on Oct. 12.
Lavinia Moyer, theater department
professor at WSU, speaks on Oct. 18.
Mark Stryker, music critic for the
Detroit Free Press, Oct. 26; and the St.
Clair Trio performs Nov. 2.
