For Openers Hannah-Made In America 111 or most kids, receiving a red, white and blue ribbon would bring an appreciated show of American loyalty' that would end up displayed on a backpack or a jacket. For 12-year-old Hannah Gross of West Bloomfield such a patriotic gesture, made by Joel Davidson, her eighth grade history teacher at Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit, it sparked an idea. She came home from school and said, 'Dad, let's make these and sell them for donations in front of the house, - says Hannah's father, Dr. Arnie Gross who helped Hannah along with her mother Judy and brother Jesse, 14. "We made about 100 — nice ones with a brass clip — using a glue gun." "The ribbons were red, white and blue and were in the shape of a loop," Hannah says. The kind the breast cancer foundation uses and 0 the kind people wear when they are in mourning." Soon, Hannah's neighbors and friends joined her in the project that grew to include a bake sale and was moved to a better-traveled site. Two Eli Zucker, 7, Ari Zucker, 6 Hannah days and several pin-making Gross, 12, Sammi Haber, 12, Amanda sessions later, sales hit a Goldstone, 11, Andrew Goldstone, 8, and grand total of S1,741. Noah Zucker, 9, all of West Bloomfield in "One man pulled to the front of Hannah Gross' home. side of 15 Mile, but kept his windows up, flipping through his wallet for about three minutes," Hannah says. "That very generous man gave us a one-hundred dollar bill. When I returned to our station to put the money in the jar, I found out that at that same time, a generous woman had just written a one-hundred dollar check." Learning that Comerica Bank offered to match contributions made to the Red Cross relief fund, Hannah took the proceeds from the sale to them, making a donation of $3,482. "I think that it was a mitzvah to be making a donation to people in need," Hannah says. "It is so important that people are generous and willing to give. People seem to be supporting out country like they should be." ❑ —Shelli Liebman Dorfman, sta writer GRAPEJEWZ AREN'T JOO HAVING llirtStqV'clia A t i Don't Know ©2001 ine IICKWELITELWEEEMUIIII By Goldfein I srael has been described as the land flowing with milk and honey.
