While the timing of the Jewish New
Year seems almost ironic with the Sept.
11 terrorism, Rosh Hashanah is even
more meaningful this year than ever
("Hitting Home," Sept. 14, page 26).
While we reflect the days past, both
good and bad, there is no better time
for reflection and self-examination. I
know for me, ushering in this new year
has a very different spiritual significance
than years prior.
For all of our children and for genera-
tions to follow, we must believe in the
human spirit and of people doing more
good than evil. We actually have heroes
again in our midst, not a rock star or
professional basketball player, but fire-
fighters and rescue workers risking their
own lives for their fellow men and
women.
Let us all pray for peace in this new
year, and be grateful to love and be
loved by those who surround us.

Relief Support

As a senior living in the Prentis Jewish

Apartments, I am proud to say that our
tenants came with open hearts to
donate money for the tragedy in New
York City ("Rallying Together," Sept.
21, page 5). In just three days, contri-
butions amounted to more than $1,500
— and we are still collecting.
We must say the new Americans were
very generous. Their slogan is: "We are
Americans. This is our country We
have to help."
We should all remember to help each
other. We are all Americans.
"Thank you" to all who are working
for the cause.

It's Time We
Walk Together

Despite the very short time between the
nightmarish events of Sept. 11 and the
appearance of your Rosh Hashanah
issue ("Rosh Hashanah 5762," Sept.
14), the Jewish. News already carried the
coverage of the horrendous events,

including public response. Kol hakavod
[way to go]!
On Sept. 12, I attended a United We
Walk leadership luncheon in West
Bloomfield to kick off this community-
wide annual tribute to the life and mis-
sion of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
However, because of the unpredictable
turn of events, it became a memorial to
the thousands of Americans who fell
victim to the worst terrorist event in our
nation's history.
The keynote speaker was Rabbi
Joshua Bennett of Temple Israel; he led
participants in prayer and spoke of the
good will among all of God's children,
which was the cornerstone of Dr. King's
philosophy
Evelyn Orbach, artistic director of the
West Bloomfield-based Jewish
Ensemble Theatre, brought her touch
to the fore. All of JET's plays this season
will deal with the issue of intolerance
and its negative consequences.
United We Wall: is another great asset
Of our community. I hereby call upon
everyone, black and white, Jew and gen-
tile, to walk together. It is a most
rewarding experience.

How Lucky
Am I?

[The writer is an 11-year-old
student at the Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit. She wrote
this verse the evening of the

attacks on America, Sept. 11.]

I've got a roof over my head
And a cozy bed
Clothes that fill my closet
Money to make a deposit

I've got books to read
And our mouths we are able to feed
I've got fi-iends and family that care
And with them I can share

Memories that will last my life
Through the grief and through strife
I've got a school to teach me
With teachers who reach me

My life is good
As any life should
How lucky am I?
