Spiritual Cancer Support Group Set The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, in collaboration with Rabbi Michael Moskowitz of Temple Shir Shalom, announces the fall session of its faith-based spiritual support group for Jewish cancer patients, survivors and family members. The group will meet 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings at the temple for nine weeks beginning Oct. 23. During the course of the group, participants will: • Explore how religious beliefs and Jewish practices can be used as strate- gies to help patients feel more in con- trol of the cancer experience; • Explore personal spirit-building with hands-on experiences; • Identify the tools available within Judaism — such as one's belief in God, prayer and ritual — that can provide comfort, hope and coping and reframe negative thoughts into positive ones; • Be supported by others living through a similar experience. The group will be led by therapist Brenda Beron and social worker Patricia Milner Sachs, both cancer sur- vivors. Sessions will also address topics such as uncertainty, helplessness, lack of control, the doctor-patient relation- ship, treatment related concerns, self and body image, the effect illness has on family, reordering life and personal goals, social relationships, and "Why me?" To register, call Pat Sachs by Oct. 18 at 800-KARMANOS (800 527-6266) or at (248) 354-4188. There is no charge.
