evil, between right and wrong, is supe-
rior to all other distinctions," he said.
"We know we will be tested in the
years ahead, but we must remember
always that it is our destiny as Jews to
live with what is more than ourselves."
Bingham Farms' Doreen Hermelin
received Federation's Fred M. Butzel
Memorial Award, the Jewish commu-
nity's highest honor for distinguished
communal service.
Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Congregation Sharey Zedek
presented the award.
"All too often, being Jewish
is not a source of joy. Being
Jewish is a source of guilt, a
source of responsibility, a
source of difficulty," Rabbi
Groner said. "But authentic
Judaism enables us to say
how wonderful is our life,
how great is our heritage.
And that joy is Doreen, and
that joy is the source of fulfillment."
Mrs. Hermelin, whose husband
David died of brain cancer last year,
humbly accepted the award.
"This speech was very hard for me
for many reasons. When told of being
the recipient of the award, I immedi-
ately thought of David. It makes it
hard to know that he's not in the audi-
ence, when I felt this is something he
would have been so proud of, and also
because he was so instrumental in me
receiving this," she said.
"The other reason is that although
we were all devastated by this horrible
terrorist attack in this country, our
family was affected greatly by the loss
of Ian Schneider, and it changed the
way I look at things."
Schneider, Hermelin's sister Reggie
Fisher's son-in-law, was one of 680
employees of Cantor Fitzgerald
Securities caught in the terrorist
attacks in the World Trade Center. His
body is still missing.
"As we enter a new year,
we are a nation and a
people challenged."

"Then I thought, in light of this ter-
rible tragedy, I'd come to the conclu-
sion that it is evenings like this that
repudiate what the terrorists are trying
to do; that this incredible community
comes together and they're able to find
the good in the face of this unspeak-
able evil," she said.
"So, therefore, the work in this com-
munity gives my life, gives our lives,
added dimension and purpose and, in
that spirit, I tell you that I am com-
