Campaign Chairs Are Named

Nancy Grand and Douglas Bloom have
been selected to chair the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's 2002
Annual Campaign, the Detroit Jewish
community's central fund-raising appeal.
Federation's Annual Campaign 2002
will seek funds for programs and services
that assist Jews living in metro Detroit,
Israel and 58 other countries around the
world.
A member of the Federation Board of
Governors and its executive committee,
Grand co-chaired Federation's Annual
Campaign last year with Paul Zlotoff. She
also is a member of the United Jewish
Foundation Board of Directors. Grand is
the previous chair of the Israel and
Overseas Committee of Federation's for-
mer Michigan-Israel Connection.
Douglas Bloom
Her other affiliations include the Joint
Distribution Committee and the United
Way Community Services Speakers
Bureau. A Bloomfield Hills resident, she is
a member of Temple Beth El.
Bloom is a former president of the
Jewish Community Center and served as
chairman of Federation's Education
Division. He has co-chaired Federation's
Industrial Automotive Division and
10,000 Division, and the JCC's Senior
Adult Committee.
He has been a board member of Temple
Kol Ami, the National Federation of
Temple Brotherhoods, and the American
Israel Chamber of Commerce. A congre-
gant of Temple Kol Ami, Bloom resides in
Birmingham.
The goal for Federation's Annual
Nancy Grand
Campaign 2002 is $32 million. The com-
munity also anticipates raising an addition-
al $5 million through the Berman/Handleman Challenge Fund, which will raise
dollars for vulnerable populations in Israel that are affected by the government's
curs in social services during this most difficult time. All increases made to the
2002 Annual Campaign, and all new gifts, will be matched dollar for dollar by
the Berman/Handleman Fund.

Tests Determine Heart Health

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and the DMC
Sinai-Grace Cardiac Rehabilitation
Program will perform assessments to
determine personal risk factors for
heart disease.
The exams will take place 8:30
a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, and
Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the JCC in
West Bloomfield.
The 15-minute test will include a

total blood cholesterol, blood sugar
level, blood pressure reading and a
body fat and computerized lifestyle
analysis.
Exams are by appointment only

MJAC To Fete
10th Anniversary

The Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition
(MJAC) invites the community to cele-
brate its 10th anniversary 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 6, at Congregation Shir
Tikvah in Troy.
MJAC will mark the retirement of its
first executive director, Edwina Davis.
Tribute will also be made to MJAC's
first four presidents, Susie Leemaster,
Linda Lee, Michelle Passon and Dr.
Burton Fogelman.
Highlights will include a Havdathh
service led by Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg, an
AIDS Memorial Quilt ceremony, dinner,
dancing and door prizes. There will be a
drawing for the MJAC annual raffle with
a $10,000 first prize at 10 p.m.
Grounded in a foundation of Jewish
values, MJAC, a nonprofit organization
founded in 1991, seeks through educa-
tion to improve the quality of life of
persons infected, potentially infected or
touched by HIV-AIDS.
MJAC also educates the community
about homosexuality and supports and
advocates on behalf of those who self-
identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or trans-
gender and their families.

Yad Ezra Hosts
Food Drive

Synagogues, Hillel Day School and
Hechtman Apartments will participate
in Yad Ezra's annual Yom Kippur Food
Drive.

Young Israel of Oak Park and Temple
Beth El have distributed specially
designed bags and/or donation
envelopes to their members for the col-
lection of packaged food and funds to
benefit Yad Ezra's 1,100 needy client
families. The food is then picked up by
Yad Ezra volunteers and brought to the
organization's warehouse for distribution.
Every year, the community-wide effort
provides 30,000 pounds of donated
food for Yad Ezra client families. Non-
kosher food collected will be given to
the Food Bank of Oakland County and
Gleaners Community Food Bank.
Yad Ezra distributes more than 60,000

Israel Bonds have supported the build-
ing of the modern state, the absorption
of over one million immigrants and the
establishment of one of the world's pre-
eminent high-tech sectors.
Among his undertakings on behalf of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek was the
directing, planning and building of the
Applebaum Life and Family Center and
Laker Education and Youth Complex in
West Bloomfield. Other synagogue
involvement includes serving on the
board of directors from 1989-1995, the
endowment board for 15 years and the
cemetery board from 1993-2001.

The Pet-A-Pet Club is seeking volun-
teers and their pets to make one-hour
