"I go back and forth between digi-
tal and real paint as each method
informs the other," says Hegyi,
already planning for a January group
show, High Resolution: Digital Art in
the 21st Century, in the B.K. Smith
Gallery at Lake Erie College in
Painesville, Ohio.
"The computer frees me to make
endless changes but makes it more
difficult to show the process.
However, as in real painting, I don't
erase but rather paint over and use
several brushes at once. I also use the
computer to do studies and solve real
painting problems."

"I like working with the computer
because I can try so many different
options," says Hegyi, who has anoth-
er son, Alex 14, and whose husband,
Dennis, is a physics professor. "I can
change a line or a color and go back
to an earlier version."
Hegyi often is inspired by other
artists — Richard Diebenkorn,
Louise Bourgeois, Mark Rothko,
Susan Rothenberg — and thinks
about their work while absorbed in
her basement studio. The relation-
ships filling her projects have to do
with people, moving figures, architec-
tural spaces, color and line, light and
dark and realism and abstraction.
The artist, whose maternal great-
grandfather starred the Machzike
Hadath Community of Orthodox
Jews in London, is a lifetime member
of Hadassah and an active member of
Beth Israel Congregation and the
Jewish Community Center in Ann
Arbor. These interests are among the
motivation for her works that portray
religious subjects.
Her painting Ehad Mi Yode'ah
("Who Knows One"), was inspired by
the Bat Sheva Dance Co. from Israel.
