temple building. Another widely circu-
lated e-mail asked everyone to wear red,
white and blue clothing on Sunday.
A 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23,
Interfaith Prayer Service, organized by
the National Council of Community
and Justice, will be held at Joe Louis
Arena in Detroit.
Even without specific threats against
Jewish agencies, some area events and
groups have decided to increase security.
At the Oak Park JCC, a guard has
been checking names against a list of
members and staff. At both Centers,
only members and staff were permit-
ted into the building unless escorted
by staff The curb areas near the main
entrance to each building were
blocked from park cars. Newspaper
boxes outside the Oak Park center
were moved. Only a single door has
been unlocked for entrance.
While some opted not to attend the
Sara Tugman Bais Chabad Torah
Center dinner Sept. 12, many of those
who did attend were relieved to be
greeted by 15 off-duty police officers
parking cars.
A letter sent to a multitude of
Jewish agencies, synagogues and
schools included the words of Rabbi
Elimelech Goldberg of Young Israel of
Southfield, who is also Southfield
Police Department chaplain:
"Chief Thomas of the Southfield
Police Department has assigned a spe-
cialized work force of highly trained
officers to do extra foot patrol and
bomb sweeps in all of the high-profile
vulnerable areas in Southfield."
While travel prohibitions and
restrictions have caused some families
to be apart for Rosh Hashanah, for
most, alternate arrangements are avail-
able. Detroit-area students studying in
New York schools who will be unable
to make it home are hoping to observe
Rosh Hashanah together or with fami-
lies of their New York classmates.
Ruth Wayne of Beverly Hills, who typ-
ically spends the holiday with her sons
and grandchildren in Dallas, was uncer-
tain as to whether she would be able to
be there, but said her trip was the least of
her concerns last week. She was thankful
for her family's safety and joined others
in prayer for a new year of peace. 71
