5799 West Maple (one block west of Orchard Lake Road) West Bloomfield

the clinical social worker who found-
ed Beit T'Shuvah 16 years ago.
Last year, he was ordained a
Conservative rabbi by the University
of Judaism in Los Angeles, but con-
siders himself "post-denominational."
"I'm not a social worker," he
emphasized. "I'm a soul wrestler. I
sometimes use four-letter words. But
we celebrate Shabbat each Friday
evening. We study Torah. We heal."
Repeatedly imploring his audience
that Judaism cannot afford to lose
even one soul, he said loudly, "It's a
shande [shame]."
He drew embarrassed laughter when
he asked, "Are Jews in denial?"
"In Detroit, you have about
100,000 Jews. I guarantee you that 10
percent of that population has some
problem with addiction."
He passionately urged the commu-
nity to unify and pressure its religious
and secular leaders to set a goal of
developing a program similar to the
one existing in Los Angeles, which 15
Michigan residents have participated
in.
"We raised $5 million. You can do
this. You have the disease. Now you
have the cure."
He wished the audience what he
says he has now — "a life of joy."
The evening included a personal
testimony by a local attorney whose
prior addiction to marijuana had
compromised not only his profession-
al abilities, but took over his entire
life.
"I'm here to tell you there is more
to JACS than a support group," the
speaker said. "It works."
Allum urged listeners to educate
friends and family members about
Jewish Family Service's program,
which offers individual and family
counseling as well as the Tuesday
night support group at the agency's
West Bloomfield offices.
"We need to network. We need to
get a core group together in Detroit
by going into the shuls and temples.
Talk to your rabbis. Tell them to get
involved," she said. LI]
