SKLAR Editor hey came by the hundreds to take comfort in each other's healing powers after our nation's worst ter- rorist attack. "We are in pain; we are vulnerable," said Rabbi Marla Hornsten at a community unity service held at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield on Sept. 13, two days after terrorists who commandeered commercial airliners crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City; the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and the Pennsylvania countryside, killing thousands. With people of all ages gathered in the sanctuary, yahrtzeit (memorial) candles aglow and dry eyes more the exception than the rule, Rabbi Hornsten said: "We come together as a community to share our anger, our despair, our sorrow. We come together to mourn the loss of so many people whose lives were taken in acts of senseless violence. "We come together as a community and as a family to pray for our country, to affirm life, to applaud the heroism and goodness of strangers, and to celebrate the miracles of survival." Rabbi Paul Yedwab noted the irony of Israelis comforting the 81 Detroiters who were on the IsraelNow Solidarity Mission at the time of the terrorism — much like the support Detroit Jewry has shown Israel during the latest intifada (Palestinian uprising). "How good it is for brothers and sisters to come together in times like this," he said. Lamenting the loss of life and breach in our security, he urged that we "stand together as a nation, as a wall of hope, that no terrorist can destroy." Before the singing of "Mi Shebeirach" and "God Bless America," Rabbi Harold Loss strived to shape the focus of the community's outrage. "Our anger should not be directed at our neighbors. Our anger should not be directed at the defenseless. Our anger should be directed toward the perpetrators of this madness." HunterDouglas 5528 Drake at Walnut Lake Rd, W. "We came out with such a sense of unity," she said. 'And when you have that, you know you will triumph." She said she walked away with tears "because my heart hurt, and will hurt for a long time, but it was the only place I could go for help. "Everybody there was hurting," she added. "This is real. I didn't live through Pearl Harbor, but I feel like this is the Pearl Harbor of my generation." ❑ Birthday Parties, Girl/Boy Scout Parties Corporate Events, Field Trips & Gift Certificates From Scratch OM) 4 (laccef For Evervoild "1 29531 Northweste-rn Hwy.
