To the members of our Great Lakes Jewish Community:

The B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region joins with all Americans in mourning the loss of
so many innocent lives in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington DC.

This great tragedy drastically changes the lives of the families who are now left behind
to suffer the losses of loved ones, as well as the injured who must now put their lives
back together.

We are asking for your help in this time of need. B'nai B'rith has established a
disaster relief fund so our community can provide assistance to the families
and victims.

The shock and outrage that we all feel must now be translated into coming together
to help our fellow Americans in the days oftheir sorrow and despair.

Please make your tax deductible contribution payable to the B'NAI B'RITH
DISASTER RELIEF FUND and send to:

members of the Central Galilee
region who had planned a solidarity
march and festive dinner.
Our 81 faithful regrouped and
with perfect harmony decided what
Jews always decide: We would
choose life. We would not allow the
terrorists to steal our moment. We
would proceed.
As we arrived, we could see the 200
members of our Israeli family waiting
to greet us. We stepped off the buses
and wondered how we would muster
the courage to do what we intended,
to show solidarity.
But the tables had turned. The
Israelis had arrived with their own
agenda. They embraced us with mes-
sages of condolence, concern and
understanding. They came to show
their solidarity with us.
While the Palestinians celebrated
the death and destruction in
America with jubilant demonstra-
.
tions in east Jerusalem, and in
Hebron and in Nablus, Israel
declared a day of national mourning:
Flags flew ar half staff, all celebra-
tion was canceled, a memorial serv-
ice took place at the Western Wall
and Israelis stood in line to donate
blood.
Every Israeli we encountered
expressed concern for us and for
America. When we arrived at our hotel
that Tuesday evening, we gathered
around a large-screen television. Silence
took over our group as We began ro
absorb the images than the world had
been seeing for so many hours.
Amongst the tears and the prayers,
we hoped that maybe now the world
would understand and unite to fight
this terrible evil.
As the Days of Ave are shadowed
by days of uncertainty, we Jews must
maintain a dual-focused agenda.
Make no mistake: We have a war
on two fronts. As members of a
united America, we shall stand
together to support whatever it takes
to regain our birthright of freedom.
As Jews in America, we cannot allow
the plight of Israel to fall from the
front pages.
We can make a difference, and will
do whatever it takes to maintain our
birthright of Israel as the one and
only homeland for the Jewish peo-
ple. Israel needs us and we need
Israel.
When we landed at John F.
Kennedy Airport, the El Al captain
bid us farewell in his deep Israeli
accent: L'hitraot, Shanah tovah [See
you later, Happy New Year] and
God Bless America. Li
