age 63; 2,500 people attended his
funeral.
Doreen Hermelin claims public
speaking is not her forte.
"When my knees are straight, my
mouth doesn't work well," she laughed.
"I'm nervous standing at a microphone
... I do better just sitting and chatting.
But if you care enough about an
organization, such as Israel Bonds,
then vou bite the bullet and stand up
and talk. Also, my many visits to Israel
always re-energized me, gave me a new
spirit and sort of propelled me to want
to talk more to the public."
Her advice to other prospective
Butzel Award winners?
"If I accomplished what I did in the
community, then anyone can do it.
People should learn more about their
communities and, if some group or
program touches their heart, they
should get out there and do something
about it by helping and giving."

Missing David

Hermelin misses her husband
immensely when hosting meetings and
fund-raising events at her large
Bingham Farms home.
used to stay in the background
and plan the meetings ... the invita-
tions, catering and all of the logistics,"
she said. "When guests arrived, things
Got exciting and David took over to
greet them, make remarks, tell jokes
and so forth. Now, I've taken over his
role and it's difficult. But my son,
Brian, also has accepted that task and
done a great job ... and it has removed
some of the hurt for me.
Besides Brian and Jennifer Hermelin
of Bingham Farms, Hermelin's chil-
dren are Marcie and Robert Orley of
Franklin, Francine and Adam Levite of
New York, and Karen and Mark
Borman and Julie and Mitchell Frank
of Los Angeles. They all plan ro attend

the Butzel Award ceremony.
Doreen Curtis met David Hermelin
at Camp Tamak‘va in Ontario when
she was 10 and he was 12. They start-
ed dating as teenagers. She left the
University of Colorado to get engaged,
and was married at 19.

Keeping Busy

Hermelin says her life is somewhat less
hectic now, but that was hard to detect
in a Monday morning visit to the
home.
She returned to Detroit late the
night before from her nephew's wed-
ding in California. During an hour
interview with the Jewish News, there
were interruptions, such as questions
from her secretary and some phone
calls, including one from her 87-year-
old mother, Anna, of Southfield.
Later, she was off to give one of her
patented speeches about her two years
in Norway at a luncheon at Temple
Israel. She's done five of them, and
will take the "show" on the road in the
future to a synagogue in Toledo.
After a quick stop at the hair salon
in the afternoon, she would attend
two evening social functions. She
would stop in at the Weizmann
Institute of Science gala, then have
dinner at the Seeds of Peace affair,
where Brian would present the David
Hermelin Peacemaker Award to Ford
Motor Company CEO Jacques Nasser.
That pace of meetings and social
events continues throughout the week.
In recent months, she has hosted fund-
raising events at her home for the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra, ORT, Democratic
gubernatorial candidate James Blanchard
and Democratic Sen. Carl Levin ... and
more are in the offing. She wants to
focus on specific people and groups she
wants to help, rather than spread herself
too thin among many
