ithin 48 hours last week, joy turned to sorrow for Doreen Hermelin
and her family.
On Sunday, Sept. 9, she was in California to celebrate the wedding of her
nephew, Kevin Fisher, son of her sister and brother-in-law, Reggie and Dr.
Bobby Fisher of Santa Monica.
But the tragic events of Tuesday, Sept. 11 interceded. Ian Schneider, hus-
band of the Fishers' daughter, Cheryl, was caught in the terrorist attack on
New York's World Trade Center. He is one of 680 employees of Cantor
Fitzgerald Securities who had offices on floors 101-105 of the North Tower.
Many employees of the firm — friends of Kevin's from when he also
worked in that office — had attended his California wedding. All are among
the 5,000 people listed as missing.
Upon hearing the news, Hermelin, of Bingham Farms, drove to New York
with other members of her family. Others followed later in the week, including
Doreen's brother and his wife, Eugene and Suzanne Curtis of West Bloomfield.
A memorial service for Ian Schneider, in his 40s, was held Sunday at a
synagogue in Short Hills, N.J., attended by about 1,800 people. The
Schneiders have three children under age 10. Ei

In July, she paid a bittersweet visit to
Norway to renew acquaintances in the
diplomatic and governmental commu-
nities, and to attend the annual
Fourth of July celebration at the
American Embassy. When David
Hermelin was ambassador, the
Hermelins threw a gigantic Fourth of
July party, setting a standard that,
according to Doreen, still hasn't been
met.
'They again distributed T-shirts dec-
orated with flags of the 50 U.S. states,
but this time the black initials `DH'
were on a sleeve in tribute to David,"
she said.
While David was ill, the. Hermelins
received a number of phone calls and
cards from people like Bill Clinton, Al
Gore, Madeleine Albright and other
governmental and diplomatic officials
— but she hasn't heard from many
•
since his death.
She is amused by the story of how
Clinton apparently is being "haunted"
by David as he travels around the
world, giving speeches and appearing
at social functions. Explained Doreen:
"People are always calling me to say
they met Bill Clinton at one function
or another and told him they knew his
old friend, David Hermelin. Can you
imagine that all they had to say to the
former president of the United States
is that they knew David Hermelin?"

In David's Footsteps

Doreen feels she has to stay busy all of
the time to keep the "bad feelings away"
My friends have been wonderful to
me and include me in their dinner
and party plans ... and my kids have
been terrific, helping me with speeches
and my financial affairs — and that
has been a real learning curve for me. I
also spend more time with my eight
grandchildren. And even though this
house is large, I'll never leave because
the kids are always around."
Her eyes glisten when she describes
how her husband used to "juggle a lot
of balls in the air at the same time.
"Bur when he got sick, he realized
he couldn't juggle any more, and he
told me so. But he kept up his hope
until the end ... he never said, 'Why
me?' Now, I've picked up where he
left off."
Rabbi Irwin Groner of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, who will
deliver the tribute to Doreen at the
Butzel Award ceremony, called her a
"leader in her own right in the com-
munity, becoming her own channel
for God's work.
"The Hebrew word is chesal, a woman
of valor and kindness. She touches the
lives of others with love, understanding,
graciousness and generosity, and she con-
tinues to be an inspiration for the entire
community" Rabbi Groner said.
