HILLEL

Hillel Teachers Association of
Metropolitan Detroit, said the new
contract agreement passed very nar-
rowly.
Lash said the former contract was
"a dinosaur."
"It had ambiguous language that
left too much to interpretation," she
said. "We tried to take some of that
ambiguity out."
Also, she said, the old pact was an
"add-on" contract, with extra clauses
tacked on as they came up.

"In the eight-plus
years I've been here,
it's unprecedented
to have an
agreement that
lasts four years."

.— Scott Cranis,
chief financial o leer

The teachers association is affiliat-
ed with the Michigan Federation of
Teachers and School-Related
Employees, AFL-CIO.
Association members worked on
revising the old contract from
October 2000 through March 2001,
Lash said. "We completely rewrote it.
I think coming to an agreement will
be much easier in four years than it
was this time," she said.
Lash said economic issues were
only part of the discussion.
"Often, money takes a back seat to
non-economic issues," she said.
"Often, the non-economic issues deal
with how people are treated on the
job. For instance, how teacher files
should be kept — what's in them,
v,rhat's not in them."
The teachers' prior contract, which
dated from 1998, expired Aug. 31.
Teachers and administrators agreed
to extend the contract through
Thursday, Sept. 6.
Hillel began the school year Aug.
27 with 760 students in kindergarten
through eighth grade. Of its 90 fac-
ulty members. only 70 are represent-
ed by the union. The remainder —
teacher aides, resource room teachers
and teaching assistants — negotiate
on their own. E
