he only Jewish candidate in
the 10-person field finished a
strong third in the Southfield
City Council primary on Tuesday.
Veteran Councilman Sidney Lantz,
age 80, may have been rejected by the
courts but was backed by 4,677
Southfield voters in his re-election bid.
Lantz's court protest over the rejec-
tion of absentee ballots that were deliv-
ered late in the 1999 election was
denied recently by the Michigan
Supreme Court. His lawyer says he may
appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Lantz contends he would have fin-
ished higher than fourth in the 1999
election, and would have won a four-
year Council seat.
The Southfield results (incumbents
noted by asterisk):
City Council (top 8 will run for
four seats in November):
Paul Condino - 5,003, Joan Seymour
4,878, Sidney Lantz' 4,677, Nida
Samona - 4,601, Kenson Siver 3,301,
Carolyn Belcher 3,125, Walter Bentley
III 2,629, Demetria Taylor 2,515.
Eliminated in the primary were Brain
Fifelski 1,308, and Samir Shoukri 734.
In the mayor's race, 29-year incum-
bent Donald Fracassi polled 4,934
votes and will face City
Councilwoman Brenda Lawrence
(4,053 votes). Oakland County
Commissioner Eric Coleman, with
1,030 votes, finished third.
In the city treasurer's race, Jewish can-
didate Ahuva Rogers finished a distant
third with 972 votes. Incumbent Roman
Gronkowski, 4,999 votes, will face chal-
lenger John Reeves, 3,596, in November.
