n Friday, Sept. 7, teachers at
Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit voted to
ratify a four-year contract.
The agreement includes gradual
raises in teachers' salaries at all steps,
from step one to step 11. During the
second year of the contract (2002-
2003) a beginning teacher with a
bachelor's degree at step one will
earn $30,000. By the third year, a
master's degree teacher at step 11 will
earn just over $60,000.
In addition, three more days will
be added to the academic calendar at
the Farmington Hills school: one day
this year, and one day each in each of
the two succeeding years. However,
there will be no additional minutes
added to the school day, as had been
requested by the administration.
"The board of directors and
administration of Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit are very
pleased to have come to an agree-
ment with the Hillel Teachers
Association," said Marianne
Bloomberg, the school's spokesper-
son.
Scott Cranis, the school's chief
financial officer and a member of the
administration's bargaining team,
said he was pleased that the agree-
ment lasts for a four-year period.
Previous contracts have lasted two or
three years.
"In the eight-plus years I've been
here, it's unprecedented to have an
agreement that lasts four years,"
Cranis said.
Payroll is the largest component of
Hillel's budget, he said, and having a
four-year contract in place gives the
administration the opportunity to do
more forward planning. "It also helps
parents because we can project
tuition going forward, over a longer
period of time," he said.
Cranis declined to comment on
any other details of the agreement.
