Detroiters in New York
City provide firsthand
accounts of tragedy.

I

said, "I'm still living."
I was practically walking backward
with my eye on the needle of the
remaining tower. Suddenly, it was like
watching a rocket taking off, but in
reverse. A man in front of me, who
clearly had seen what had happened,
turned around nevertheless, and asked,
"Did the tower just go down?"
Moriah and I found ourselves walk-
ing up Seventh Avenue, but we were
ordered east or west as police quickly
cleared a passage for emergency vehi-
cles heading toward the scene.

But on Tuesday, Sept. I I. I was
scheduled for a field rrip to the Bureau
of Immunizations in Lower
Manhattan, with Moriah, a fellow
medical student.
Moriah heard two airplanes had hit
the World Trade Center, but not
knowing what had happened, we
decided just to go, and boarded the
subway at 68th and Lexington.
When we got off at City Hall, about
six blocks away from the flaming tow-
ers of the World Trade Center, we
encountered a hysterical crowd. Police
officers stood in front of the federal
buildings in our midst, suggesting that
any one could be rigged with bombs
and be the next to go.
Almost immediately, people started
running and screaming, and we
looked up to see an immense billow-
ing cloud of smoke and cascading
glass. One of the towers was toppling.
People, not knowing exactly what was
happening, streamed uptown at the
frantic prompting. of the NYPD.
The crowd was a mix of shocked
observers, disbelieving gawkers and the
occasional ghost covered in concrete
dust and soot. Men in business suits
were in tears, and some people lay on
the ground, having fainted.
I asked a police officer covered in
white dust whether she was OK. She
