of Judgment, is that day in the beginning of the new year that con- tains the judgment on everything that is going to happen in the corn- ing year. Just as the seed contains all the instructions for the tree to grow — and it just takes time for it to happen — on Rosh Hashanah the fate for the whole new year is deter- mined. It just takes time for every- thing to happen. Realizing the great import of this day, we should ask ourselves what we can do to ensure that our judg- ment for the year will be favorable. If we look back on the past year, improve on our character and decide to do better in the coming year, we can be sure of a favorable judgment. Throughout the year, we can also improve on our behavior; but Rosh Hashanah is the time of Year that gives us the energy to continue to do it. If someone is drowning in the water, and he feels himself slipping away like he just can't hold out any longer, and then he sees a ship, he will suddenly feel a new burst of energy and he'll be able to hold out. Rosh Hashanah is like that ship. Throughout the year, we are drown- ing in our ruts and routines, and even though we try to change, it's hard, and we feel like we can't do it. But then comes Rosh Hashanah and it energizes us to improve our ways and set our goals for the coming year. We should all merit a good judg- ment this year.
