(248) 433-3323 Bloomfield Hills Oak Park wwwidcliniccom hen I was younger, Rosh Hashanah was not a significant holi- day to me. I enjoyed Chanukah, of course, because of the presents, and Passover, because of the time off from school. However, Rosh Hashanah was simply a time to skip school and hang out with my friends at synagogue for the day. I did not truly know or under- DANIELLE stand the signifi- DAVID cance of Rosh Special to the Hashanah and did not truly Jewish News appreciate the beauty of the holiday. Now, as I have gotten older and begun to learn more about this day, it has taken on a whole new meaning. When I think of Rosh Hashanah, I think not of just a new year, but also of new beginnings. It is a time to think of all the good and bad I have done in the past year, to be forgiven for the bad and to begin the new year with a clean slate. My favorite part of Rosh Hashanah is tashlich, which is the custom of throwing away your sins in a body of water and praying for those sins to be buried. It has been tradition in my synagogue to walk the teenagers down to the river off Telegraph Road and be handed a piece of challah to symbolize our sins. Safe? Maybe not. Fun? Definitely, yes. All together, we begin throwing away our sins in hopes of beginning a fresh new year. This is just one of the many holi- days within Judaism that stands out from the others. Not many religions dedicate a time for all to be forgiven for the sins of the past year. Moreover, not many religions give the chance for you to have a new start in life for the new year. With Rosh Hashanah just around the corner, we have to step away from our past and look forward to the new beginnings, our future. ❑ Danielle David, 17, daughter of Pamela and Jacob David of Farmington Hills, is a senior at North Farmington High School.
