Briskets By The Busload

n the midst of taking Rosh Hashanah orders at
his butcher shop last week, Johnny Katz received
an unusual phone request.
A woman called to say she wanted to bring a
busload of bubbies from Toledo to buy meat for the hol-
idays," says Katz, owner of Harvard Row Kosher Meats
and Poultry in West Bloomfield.
"We have no place to buy
fresh, kosher meat here," says
Dee Cohen of Toledo, a first
time participant in the trip,
organized by a Toledo senior
group. "We do not have a kosher
butcher here, just a few places to
get frozen meat."
"Everyone ordered their meat
ahead of time," says Mary Lou
Whittaker, director of Jewish
Senior Services and the Senior
Adult Center in Toledo, who
SHELLI LIEBMAN coordinated the Sept. 6 trip,
DORFMAN
making the initial call to Katz.

"We first went to the bakery,
then for lunch and then they
shopped a little, before going to the butcher."
Picking up their briskets and pullets was the final
stop in a long day for the 23 women. The meat pur-
chases were stored in a refrigerator on the bus during
the trip back to Toledo.
While Whittaker has been leading pre-Rosh
Hashanah and Passover shopping trips to other Detroit
suburbs for several years, the addition this year of the
West Bloomfield stop, came at the request of some of
the women who were looking for a change.
One day earlier, however, she took a busload of shop-
pers to visit such food stores as One Stop Kosher Food
Market in Southfield and Strickley Kosher Meats and
Zeman's New York Kosher Bakery, both in Oak Park.
In addition to the shopping trips, Whittaker also
takes groups on other types of short bus rides. "We will
be going gambling next month, to the casino and the
race track," she says. "We also will go to the cemeteries
before the holiday. We have a nice new bus and we love
to travel."
