Among them is that of Amber Rose,
golden retriever owned by Alan Yost,
executive director of Adat Shalom
Synagogue. The dog has become a care-
giving companion to an 80-year-old
invalid woman and the 70-year-old sis-
ter-in-law who cares for her ... They live
alone behind the home of Alan in
Farmington Hills ... and receive heart-
warming glow at having Amber Rose
spend several hours each day with them.
TOO BAD IT is so difficult to get
crispy and dry potato pancakes these
days ... Making them was an art, and
cooks at Lieberman & Citron's on
Linwood, Darbys on West Seven Mile,
and a few delicatessens, were like
artists ... Murray Lieberman at L&C,
and John Kerezny at Darbys, were
masters.
SURE, I KNOW THAT a number
of you have seen many of the jokes in
"Oldies But Goodies" a zillion times
... Remember, that's why they're called
oldies ... But there are yet many folks
who have never heard them before ...
and those who still look upon them as
laugh-getters.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE ... from
Larry Raskin ... in Toledo ... Meyer, a
lonely widower, was walking home
one day, wishing something wonderful
would happen in his life, when he
passed a pet store and heard a squawk-
ing voice, shouting in Yiddish,
"Quawwwk — vus macht du''
Meyer rubbed his eyes and ears.
Couldn't believe it. The proprietor
sprang out of the door and grabbed
Meyer by the sleeve. "Come in here,
fella, and check out this parrot."
Meyer stood in front of an African
Grey that cocked his little head and
said, " Vus? Kenst reddin Yiddish?'
Meyer turned excitedly to the store
owner. "He speaks Yiddish?"
"Vtth den? Chinese maybe?" The
parrot replied.
In a matter of moments, Meyer had
placed $500 down on the counter and
carried the parrot in his cage away
with him. All night he talked with the
parrot in Yiddish. He told the parrot
about his father's adventures coming
to America. About how beautiful his
mother was when she was a young
bride. About his family. About his
years of work. About Florida.
