why the former site of Meating Place,
Treats, Roadhouse, Buster's Bay and
Jake's On The Lake, is still vacant.

THE NEW 1,900 square foot area
on Haggerty, between Seven and Eight
Mile Roads in Northville, is now
another Zoup! gourmet sit-down soup
restaurant and carr-yout ... It is num-
ber four by partners Eric Ersher and
David Elias.
Number one on Northwestern
Highway in Southfield, opened
September 1998, is still their flagship
operation ... Two others are
Renaissance Center and Troy-.
Also introduced at the new
Haggerty location is Good Greens,
numerous made-to-order chopped and
tossed salads ... The 12 rotating daily
soups are from a compilation of over
200 varieties.
ANOTHER VISIT TO the
Parkway Grille in the Marriott at
Centerpointe Hotel, Square Lake
Road and Opdyke, brought out
another contention ... That there are
very few places with a better Chilean
sea bass ... In fact, there aren't too
many restaurants with more value
received than Parkway ... The excel-
lent rack of lamb is also a difficult-
to-beat dish.

STILL QUITE A LOT of work yet
before the new Japanese restaurant,
Gajyoen, will open at the former site
of Powerhouse Gym in the Robins
Nest Shopping Center on Orchard
Lake Road, north of 14 Mile.
But owner Jun Hoe Choe still main-
tains that his fine Japanese spot will
open before the end of the year ... It's
quite possible ... and is expected to be
quite the place ... seating over 150,
with a half-dozen wells where cus-
tomers sit on the floor in private tata-
mi rooms, large circular sushi bar, etc.
YOU COULD SAY that Tariq
Hanna, executive pastry chef at
MotorCity Casino, has certainly come
a long way ... About 10 years ago,
around the time that cateress Shirley
Bloom arrived there on the scene, Tariq
also came to work at Vineyards, owned
by Ron Asmar on Northwestern
Highway in Farmington Hills ... Tariq
was a chef for Ron, learning the trade,
and making some pastries for him ...
But no one, not even Tariq himself,
realized that he would one day be
executive pastry chef at a major casino
such as MotorCity ... and work with a
great talent like its master chef,
