Yehuda Levi Rabin, 14, of Oak Park
gets a close view of the new Torah.

Aharon and Phyllis Meer and daughter
Miriam and Yaacov Aaron Amzalak are
among its members.
The minyan holds a joint service
with FREE (Friends of Refugees of
Eastern Europe) and also attracts many
immigrants from the former Soviet
Union-. "The Torah is the one thing
that unites all Jews, "said Aharon Meer.
"She [Norma Jean Meer] inspired us
so much to keep Jewish ideals and had
such pleasure in her grandchildren get-
ting a Jewish education. Donating this
Torah is a fitting continuation of her
legacy," said sister-in-law Shani Meer.
In recent years, the Meer family
name has become associated with
metro Detroit Jewish philanthropy,
appearing on many new buildings and
institutions that benefit the communi-
ty. Yeshiva Beth Yehudah's new pre-
school building in Southfield, the
Friendship Circle building in West
Bloomfield, the Beth Jacob School for
Girls science lab in Oak Park, new
gymnasiums at both Beth Jacob and
Yeshivat Akiva in Southfield, the
newly built Meer senior citizen apart-
ments on the campus of the West
Bloomfield JCC, new buildings in the
works for Yad Ezra and Yeshivas
Darchei Torah and more, are all sup-
ported by the generosity of the Meer
family. Yet the family is modest and
unprepossessing in the extreme.
"They're very quiet people; they're
almost embarrassed when you thank
them," said Huntington Woods attor-
ney Jeffrey Appel, a longtime friend of
Aharon Meer. "They're just such good
people." ❑
