L'Shanah Tovah!

Christmas, and I told him, "the exact
same way you celebrate Chanukah.
We simply don't."

May you be inscribed into the
book of life and may you fill
that life with books.

JN: Was Christine's family accepting
of the fact that you were Jewish?
TS: Sure, they liked me, but in there
somewhere was buried the idea that I
was different. I don't think Christine
had brought home a lot of Jewish men.
But she grew up near Detroit and the
family certainly knew Jewish people.

JN: Since you are Jewish and
Christine is not, are your kids raised
with any religion?
TS: They are raised with a strong
awareness of religion.
ion We celebrate
Chanukah, Christmas, Passover, and I
celebrate [other] Jewish holidays with
them. But there is no organized reli-
gious training where they go to
Sabbath school or Sunday school.

JN: So they won't have a bar or bat
mitzvah?
TS: No, but my son, who just turned
13, will give this service in our back-
yard where my wife and I will speak to
him, and he will give a speech and
read passages from various things. We
will invite family members. So it is a
marking of a passage of time.

JN: On Sunday night the Emmy
Awards will be held and The West
Wing has multiple nominations.
When Christine won a Golden Globe
for Chicago Hope, she was in the
bathroom when they called her name.
Are you going to be in your seat dur-
ing the whole show?
TS: Yes, but I can't guarantee that my
wife will stay in hers. When that hap-
pened to her, for me it was just
America understanding what it's like
to take a car trip with my wife.

JN: The third year of The West Wing
is about to begin. What's in store for
the show?
TS: First we kind of catch up with
what happened over the summer. Then
the president [will be] running for
office again. A team of campaigners has
to be brought in, which creates conflict
between the internal staff and this new
staff that is basically just in charge of
the election and not of policy. D

The West Wing airs on NBC 9-10
p.m. Wednesdays; the new season
begins Sept. 19. The Emmy
Awards air live 8 11 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 16, on CBS.
