ABC's Anne Frank, with 11 nominations and based upon the diary of a Jewish girl in Amsterdam in hiding from the Tommy Nazis, and TNT's Nuremberg, with four nominations and a Schlamme re-enactment of the war crimes trial of Nazi leaders, both are up for outstanding miniseries. TNT's Conspiracy, with 10 nominations and depicting the Nazi planning of the "Final Solution," is in the running for the outstanding made-for-television movie. The Sopranos, HBO's gangland masterpiece, leads all shows with 22 Emmy nominations, followed by 18 nods for NBC's The West Wing. The White House drama, starring Martin Sheen as a liberal president with an idealistic staff, collected a record nine Emmys last year. If history repeats itself, The West Wing's executive produc- er/director, Thomas Schlamme, will again walk away with at least one of those coveted statuettes. But whether or not he scores another win, says Schlamme — whose friends and family call him Tommy — the hit series about a group of hard-working presidential staffers is "gratifying and humbling," and the critical acclaim and recognition are more than he ever expected. About to start his third season with The West Wing, which this year won a rare second consecutive Peabody Award for broadcasting excellence, Schlamme is now considered one of television's most sought after directors. Hard work and perseverance have brought him into the limelight. Schlamme was born and raised in Houston, where his immigrant parents opened an office supply business after ceremony acknowledging the fleeing Nazi Germany. first annual Jewish image Growing up, Jewish traditions were Awards, in recognition of very important.
