BUS C6t1/46eL6g6:

• Minimum age of 21
• College graduate preferred
• Israel travel experience

In a tent behind the synagogue, a
service will be held for pre-high
school-aged students, their families
and other adults wanting to attend an
abbreviated service. Following the
service, an adult study session on the
holiday will be led by Rabbi Jonathan
Berkun's wife, Rabbi Lauren Eichler
Berkun, JTS Midwest Rabbinic
Fellow.
At the same time, children may par-
ticipate in a program led by Rabbi
Krakoff's brother, Joshua Krakoff, a
Jewish educator from New York who
attended the William Davidson
Graduate School of Jewish Education
of the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America in New York.
"He has a passion for drama, mak-
ing texts accessible to kids," Rabbi
Krakoff says. The children's program
will also include storytelling and a
shofar-blowing contest, with the win-
ner invited to blow the tekiah gedolah
(the long shofar sound) after Neila
(the concluding service of Yom
Kippur.)
In the chapel and tent services, chil-
dren will also be encouraged to accept
the honor of opening the ark.

What Else Has Changed?

On the afternoon of the first day of
Rosh Hashanah, a new family service
will be held, and will incitide an up-
close look at the Torah followed by tash-
lich (a ritual casting of sins) at the Rouge
River, which runs near the synagogue.
While the majority of changes are

being made at Shaarey Zedek's
Southfield building, services at Shaarey
Zedek B'nai Israel in West Bloomfield
will include as many of the additions
as their smaller facility allows.
"A whole new core of Torah readers
have been trained there this year under
the direction of Rabbi Bitran," Rabbi
Krakoff says.
"To me, B'nai Israel has always
been family-friendly," says Rabbi Lee
Buckman, head of school at JAMD,
who will deliver the sermon there
over the High Holidays. "It is a
model for any synagogue that wants
to involve lay people in the service."
Rabbi Krakoff stresses that changes
made to holiday services are just the
beginning. "We will be encouraging
kids to be at Kol Nidre," he says of a
service typically adult-attended. "But
this won't end after the High
Holidays. It will continue every
Shabbat beginning with Bereshit
(Genesis)," he says of the first book
of the Torah, begun this year on
Oct. 13.
No matter which service congre-
gants attend, Rabbi Krakoff assures
that they will be more interactive, par-
ticipatory and family-friendly than in
the past.
"Another great thing," he says, "is
when kids see other kids participating
and reading from the Torah, they'll be
inspired to do the same. We want
everyone to feel they belong in the
synagogue. We want the synagogue to
be about being together with genera-
tions of families."
