his fourth edition of the JN
SourceBook pays tribute to our
longstanding love affair with
food and tradition. After all,
what Jewish holiday is complete without
grandma's homemade gefilte fish, kugel or
mandelbread? And what family doesn't
have treasured recipes that have been
handed down from generation to
generation, keeping traditions alive?
JN food writer Annabel Cohen
examines the history of Jewish food and
puts it all in perspective in today's terms.
She also shares her own family recipes,
including several from her Sephardic
father's family. Jewish News readers also
weigh in with their own family favorites
and tell why they're so important.
But the recipes are tasty appetizers for the
main course — an updated, comprehensive
guide to our vast Jewish community, from
synagogues to preschools, from social service
organizations to caterers. Keep this reference
handy; it's something you'll use year-round.

Here's a personal food story to whet
your appetite.
My grandfather and his sister ran what
was arguably the best deli in Milwaukee in
the 1960s. As a kid, I'd make myself
chocolate phosphates behind the counter
and carry thick corned beef sandwiches to
diners who'd tip me way more than I
deserved.
Each sandwich was accompanied by a
spear or two of Grandpa Henry's kosher
dills. People came in just to buy those
pickles, which were made in big wooden
barrels kept in the basement of the deli.
When my family moved to Dallas —
just in time for the Kennedy assassination
— we missed those pickles. When they
came each summer to visit, my
grandparents would pack jars of them
carefully in carry-on luggage that brought
the aroma of their wonderful deli into the
airplane.
Finally, we got our own wooden barrels
and began making pickles in our Texas
