PROMISES (USA; 2001; 100 min.)
Between 1997 and 2000, directors
Justine Shapiro and B. Z. Goldberg
traced the daily lives of several
young children (ages 9 - 13) in
Israel, asking them what they
thought of the peace process. The
nonpartisan film follows some of the
children, including twins Yarko and
Daniel, who live in Jerusalem, and
Faraj, who lives in a Palestinian
refugee camp a mere 15 minutes
away. The first feature-length docu-
mentary for both Shapiro and
Goldberg, Promises was co-directed
by Carlos Bolado, well known for
previous editing credits, including
Like Water for Chocolate. (Promises
will be shown sometime this fall on
the PBS series P.O. V..)
Screening: noon Sunday, Sept. 9,
9:15 p. m. and Tuesday, Sept. 11,
Varsity 4 and Varsity 5.

THE STRUMA (United
Kingdom/Canada; 2001; 90 min.)
The story of the Struma is one of
the horrific relics of the Second
World War. The Struma was a con-
verted yacht, which — in December
1941 — carried 769 Romanian Jews
headed for British-controlled
Palestine. When the engine failed,
the boat was pulled into harbor in
Ikanbul. It sat there for two
months. On Feb. 23, 1942, the ship
was towed into the Black Sea where
it was torpedoed within 24 hours.
There was only one survivor.
Director Simcha Jacobovici docu-
ments the history, as well as British

diver Greg Buxton's recent attempts
to find the wreck. Most compelling-
ly, the documentary includes a first-
hand account from David Stoliar,
the only survivor, now 79 years old.
Jacobovici's other films include
Deadly Currents (1991) and
Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies, and the
American Dream (1998).
Screening: 6:45 p.m. Wednesday,
Sept. 12, Cumberland 3; 9:30 a.m.
Friday, Sept. 14, Varsity 8.

SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK
(USA, 2001, 107 min.)
Edward Burns (The Brothers
McMullen, No Looking Back) directs
this Woody Allen-esque romantic
comedy. Boy breaks up with girl-
friend. Boy moves in with boss. Boy
meets another woman, but she's on
the rebound from her own ex: a so-
called "good Jewish kid" from
Brooklyn. The cast includes Edward
Burns, Heather Graham, Stanley
Tucci, and David Krumholtz.
(Sidewalks of New York is scheduled
to open in Detroit in late
September.)
Screening: 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7,
Varsity 8; 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9,
Cumberland 2.

TAKING SIDES (Germany; 2001;
105 min.)
Award-winning director Istvan

historical figure Wilhelm
Furtwangler. A famous conductor
