Exceeding Your Expectations

Travel Hints

How to cut costs and get the most out of your trip.

L If the airfare quoted seems pricey, check into a vacation package.
Sometimes a plane ticket and one or more nights in a hotel are cheaper
than a ticket alone.
2. Consider purchasing your airline ticket on a Wednesday. That's often the
best day of the week to get the lowest fare.
3. If at all possible, only take carry-on luggage. This way you don't have to
worry about lost luggage or waiting endlessly for your suitcase. Try and
be one of the first people on board to ensure your luggage a spot in the
overhead bin.
4. If you do have to send your luggage through, make a list of what's inside. It
will help with insurance in case your luggage is permanently lost. Also, place
an identifying ribbon or decal on your suitcase to make it easier to locate.
5. If you are traveling to several international destinations within a short
period of time, ask about a "round the world" fare. It is usually cheaper
than buying point to point tickets.
6. Consider an alternate airport in or near the city you are departing from
or flying to — as the fare is often cheaper. For example, when flying to
Chicago, consider Midway instead of O'Hare, and in New York, think
about Newark or Islip instead of JFK or LaGuardia.
7. Paper tickets can be better. If you have an e-ticket and your flight is can-
celed, you need a paper ticket in order to transfer to another carrier.
8. Don't book "direct" flights unless there is no alternative. "Direct" does
not mean nonstop. When you are on a flight that stops, you increase
your chances for a weather-related or traffic-related delay. (Non-stop
means the plane goes straight through.)
9. Don't book a hotel based on a brochure and how many stars it claims to
have. Brochures can be misleading, and some hotels give themselves the
stars. When booking, ask about occupancy tax and sales tax; they may
be more expensive than you think.
10. Forget the prices in the cruise brochures, too. Get ready to make some
deals. With the boom in shipbuilding, the ships are waiting for you.
Travel agents and cruise consolidators offer great last-minute deals.
