Teacher: Michael Ross,

on our honeymoon in Europe."

high school algebra and geometry

"Fourth-graders are a little rowdy, but so sweet," says Lindsay. "They're tiny, like babies, in
September. It's a real growth year." Lindsay's class held a mock wedding for her and Ryan
before the school year was over. "One of the girls was the rabbi, and we had bridesmaids
and groomsmen, even a construction paper chuppah. One of the boys e-mailed me this
summer and said he had a minute of silence on July 3 (her wedding day)."

Pupils:

Berkley High School

students

Alma mater:

Wayne State
University undergraduate and
graduate schools

Classroom
experience:

5th year teacher, formerly in
the Detroit school system

First-day duds: Michael

normally wears khakis or cuffed pants
and crew-neck tees and sweaters from
Structure, The Gap, Marshall Field's
and Nordstrom. His Polo/Ralph
Lauren sweater is from The Claymore
Shop in Birmingham.

How I spent my
summer vacation:
"I taught a pre-college engineering

course at Michigan State, through
Detroit public schools." The kids call
Michael coach, too. When he's not
teaching algebraic equations, he's on the
courts coaching the girls' tennis team.

"I went to high school at Berkley," he
says, "so this should be an interesting
experience." He'll have to get used to
90-minute classes and he'll have 100
students' names to learn. "With that
much time per class, maybe they'll
actually do some homework," he says.
