5 TRAX Elul Series Concludes Student Rabbi Asszsts Tchiyah The four-part pre-High Holiday study series "Judaism and Disabilities" will conclude 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the offices of Jewish Association for Residential Care in Farmington Hills with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Mitch Parker, special needs director at Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit in Farmington Hills and reacher development coordinator at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Panel members will be Nancie Furgang, special needs director at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit; Robyn Glickman, k-2 principal at Hillel Day School and director of the Agency for Jewish Education's Efshar special education program; Joyce Keller, executive director of JARC; and Dr. David Loeffler, activist, teacher and volunteer in the field of disabilities and a parent of a young man with autism. Amber Powers, a senior at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia, will be a rabbinical resource person to Congregation T'chiyah. Student Rabbi Powers will visit T'chivah for the High Holidays and one weekend a month from September through June. She will help members develop skills and strengthen participation in Shabbat and holiday services. She will also assist in discussions, study sessions and other programs. Student Rabbi Powers earned a bachelor of arts in religion/Jewish studies from Emory University, Atlanta. She attended Pardes Institute in Jerusalem and is a par- ticipant in the Wexner Graduate Fellowship Program for Jewish Professionals. She previously was student rabbi at Havurat Lev Shalem in Atlanta and student rab- binical intern at Ramat Shalom in Plantation, Fla. Congregation T'chiyah is an egali- tarian, participatory synagogue affil- iated with the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation. Adat Shalom Hosts Picnic Adat Shalom Synagogue will hold its annual family picnic Sunday, Sept. 9. "A Shrek Fest" will feature a variety of children's activities and family games. The event will run from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. with a complimen- tary pizza lunch. The communi- ty is welcome. The picnic is co-sponsored by the Adat Shalom Youth and Education Department and the synagogue's membership and Jewish Experiences For Families committees. Chairing the event are Cheryl Margolis and Jeanne Maxbauer. Sefer Torah Is Dedicated Bais Chabad of North Oak Park along with the Meer family invites the Jewish community to a Sefer Torah dedication ceremony Sunday, Sept. 9, at Congregation Dovid Ben Nuchim, 14800 W. Lincoln, Oak Park. The Torah is being donated to the shul by the Meer family in loving memory of their mother, the late Norma Jean Meer (Chaya Chaya bas Mendel). The Torah will be escorted by a parade through north Oak Park to its new home at the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit Jimmy Prentis Morris Building.
