"As my parents planted-for me, So do I plant for my children" -Tatinucf: Ta'anit 23a Invest H your family's future... CON GREG/^\TIoN BETH SHALOM Norman Allchlm Man Of The Year Norman Michlin, who helped in lib- erating a German concentration camp and later became an advocate for human rights and social justice, has been named Man of the Year by the Louis Marshall Suburban Tikvah Lodge. Michlin, a Bloomfield Township resident, is president of Michlin Diazo Products and Great Lakes Investment Co. In World War II, he served in the Army's signal intelligence corps, earning two battle stars from Europe and one for the Battle of the Philippines. It wasn't until he and his unit arrived to liber- ate Dachau, before he was Norman Michlin sent to the Philippines, that he confronted Hitler's Final Solution. "We gave them our rations," he said, "and they ate like animals, faster than their starved bodies could handle." It was then he chose to devote his life to fighting anti-Semitism, which led to his active support of the Anti- Defamation League and B'nai B'rith, including service on the national boards. His wife, Bernice, is active with the ADL regional board. With his brother Arnold, Michlin helped the government dispose of accumulated war materials while help- ing Aid to the Palestine People, a group collecting goods needed for the soon-to-be State of Israel. "It's hard to believe that in the two or three years of this operation," Michlin said, "only one person ever asked for money. Of course, there was no budget or money. Even the freight handling was gratis." These and other reflections were shared during his remarks at the B'nai B'rith dinner on Aug. 15. He spoke of two family members: his brother Arnold, a past president of the lodge and the Greater Detroit B'nai B'rith Council and integral in the founding of the Detroit Arab and Jewish Friends; and his sister-in-law, Ava, who made aliyah and now is director of social services for the city- of Jerusalem.
