New York/JTA — The National
Basketball Association can sell candy
and cereal in Israel with its logo after
an Israeli judge rejected an appeal by
an Israeli textile company that shares
the NBA's initials.
The judge ruled that there is no
chance that someone might believe
that the products with the U.S. bas-
ketball logo are sponsored by the tex-
tile company NBA.

13 Percent Of
Israelis From FSU

Jerusalem/JTA — Immigrants from
the former Soviet Union make up 13
percent of Israel's population, accord-
ing to recently released statistics.
With 58,000 of the total number of
850,000, Haifa has the largest number
of these immigrants, followed by
Ashdod and Beersheba.
Almost 60 percent of the immi-
grants have post-high school educa-
tion, compared with 40 percent of all
Israelis.

Stir Jewish Ire

Rome/JTA — The Jewish members of
a Jewish-Catholic team formed to
study the Vatican's behavior during
World War II criticized a leading car-
dinal's attacks on them as "inflamma-
tory" and "totally unjustified" and
renewed calls to open Vatican archives
on the period.
The scholars responded Tuesday to a
document issued Aug. 24 by Cardinal
Walter Kasper, president of the
Vatican Commission for Religious
Relations with the Jews. Cardinal
Kasper accused them of "indiscretion
and polemical remarks in the press"
that fomented "distrust" and made
research "impossible to continue."
