'm not sure what I expected by
going to the JCC Maccabi
Games in New Jersey:
How would my
ream do? Would
the other teams be
nice? Would there
be fun activities?
I was also scared
because I had
never played soc-
cer competitively
KEREN
before, and neither
STIEBEL
Special to the had anyone on my
Jewish News team.
When we met on
the field for our first game, I was real-
ly nervous. I didn't know most of the
girls on my team, and being the goalie
I had reason to be scared.
About five minutes before the game,
the two teams started talking. Tracie,
the Pittsburgh goalie, was really funny,
and even told me that their team had
never practiced. Throughout that
lled encourage-
game, Tracie and I ye
ment to each other: "Nice save,
goalie!" "Come on and kick it!" At the
end of that game, Tracie and I were
laughing like crazy.
I couldn't believe that my team had
won a game 7-0!
Although there was a competitive
spirit, this was an opportunity to meet
Jewish teenagers from different states.
Each game brought new people to
meet, and new challenges to play.
My experience at the Maccabi
Games was amazing! I met new peo-
ple, played some tough games, had
new experiences, and decided that I
wanted to return next year.

A
ny athlete who participated
in the JCC Maccabi Games
this summer had the
oppor-
tunity to experi-
ence the solidarity
of the Jewish peo-
ple as well as build
on their own sense
of Jewishness.
At a minimum,
they found that

Jewish. News
They had the privilege of interact-
ing with Jewish athletes, not only
from different parts of the U.S. and
Canada, but also from Israel,
Mexico, Great Britian, Australia and,
for the first time, Poland. They
learned, hopefully, that while their
backgrounds may be different, all
these kids share something wonder-
ful in common — their heritage.
I think as parents we can teach our
kids to have a sense of values, we can
provide for their education and we
can provide them the opportunity to
learn where they came from — their
heritage. I think the Maccabi Games
contributes to this by showing the
kids that we are truly one people
with a commonality of values.
