The Best Of Everything
soggy ... "Heaven
forbid they should-
n't be crisp on the
outside and soft on
the inside!"
exclaims Hy.
He recalls when
on Livernois a cou-
ple of gents who
worked at the London Chop House
came to Hy and asked to show them
how he made and sliced his corned
beef ... They wanted to tell the chef
how to cook and cut it.
"If I went there and tried to show
them how to cook and slice, the
chefs would have thrown a knife at
me," says Hy. "Imagine telling a chef
what to do in his own kitchen!"
Back in 1949, Hy remembers,
there were eight delicatessens within
10 blocks ... "And everybody made a
good living," he says ... Leinoff's off
Waverly, Ben & George's between
Tyler and Buena Vista, Lefkofsky's at
Tuxedo, Nate's at Burlingame,
Wilson's at Richton, Liberman's (for-
merly Perlman's) between Cortland
and Sturtevant, Hy Horenstein's off
Boston and Bill Boesky's, at
Collingwood ... "Around 1945,"
recalls Hy, "a few of my favorites on
Linwood were Flashenberg's, former-
ly London's; Lou's owned by Lou
Loewe on Pingree, and Abe Boesky's
Blaine Restaurant off Blaine."
They gave him a 90th birthday
party ... and Hy, always the dapper,
well-dressed gent, looked at the fam-
ily and friends who came to pay him
homage and said, "Clothes may
make the man, but the delicatessen
business made men out of boys"
IF SOMEONE were to tell you
before that you could get beef
stroganoff at Lelli's ... or even beef
shish kabob, you'd probably think
they were about ready for the
straightjacket.
Not anymore ... Plus its famous
menu of so many years ... over 62 to
be exact ... the time-honored Italian
restaurant, still a big favorite, has
finally added another dimension to
its fine existence.
At Lelli's site on N. Opdyke,
across from the Silverdome, in
Auburn Hills, it has come out with a
special menu called "Lelli's New
Edition" ... aimed at cost and calo-
rie-conscious folks.
The newly featured entrees are
served seven days a week, lunch or
dinner, and come with a choice of
soup or salad and spaghetti.
It's beef stroganoff is tenderloin
tips and homemade fettuccine in a
