Commentary article ("This Year in
Jerusalem," Aug. 24, page 39).
The one big difference was the
Jerusalem Hilton Hotel, now known
as the David Citadel Hotel, was
packed with Americans who were
delegates to the 87th national con-
vention of Hadassah, the Women's
Zionist Organization of America.
The Sheraton Hotel, Kings Prima
Hotel and Dan Pearl Hotel also
were busy with many of the more
than 550 delegates that attended the
Hadassah convention. Our ages
ranged from 3 to 93, including
many of our male associates, includ-
ing my husband.
For one week in August, it was
almost like a "usual summer," with
16 buses running around Jerusalem
and its suburbs, touring many
Hadassah facilities and other tourist
sites. The shops were busy even on
the horrendous day of the Sbarro
Restaurant terrorist attack, when
many of our delegates were spend-
ing a few free hours on their own in
town.
One evening, we had 31 buses full
of delegates being taken to Israeli
homes for dinner and conversation;
we really caused a traffic jam.
Yes, we heard gunfire and many
sirens during our stay, and I visited
the Hadassah Hospital emergency
room, where many of the wounded
had been taken. With my husband
and friends, I also strolled along the
beautiful streets of Jerusalem, ate at
wonderful restaurants and sidewalk
cafes, shopped and bought at many
stores, attended Tisha b'Av services,
sponsored by the Conservative
Movement, at Robinson's Arch by
the Western Wall, and even relaxed
by the pool.
I know the difficulties firsthand of
visiting Israel this year as I was the
vice chair of the Hadassah conven-
tion and spent two years planning
the event. We had many obstacles to
overcome, but I am proud of the
550 women, men and children who
attended the convention. All of us
had a memorable and fascinating
experience; I urge everyone to go to
Israel now and keep the tourist
buses busy. It will be a trip of a life-
time.

Convention
