Detroit's Ian Mondrow came away with
medals in four catagories: tap (silver),
jazz (silver), hip hop (bronze) and a sil-
ver in the student choreography catego-
ry for a jazz dance to "Dirty Pop.

16 eJM Under Golf
The Detroit team took home nine medals
during the 54-hole tournament and a
nine-hole Fun Day on Tuesday
Three Detroit golfers brought home
the bronze in the 15/16 competition:
Jake Pardo on Monday Scott Weintrob
on Wednesday and Kory West on
Thursday.
In the 13/14 competition, Danny
Erhmann won the bronze on Monday,
while Adam Gordon captured the
bronze on Wednesday
Winners of the Callaway competition
on Thursday include Danny Feldheim
(gold), Ian Robinson (silver) and
Danny Kahn (bronze) in the 15/16 age
group. Aaron Siegel earned the gold in
the 13/14 age group.
The Detroit golf team did a great
job on the courses, met a lot of new
friends and thoroughly enjoyed the
week of Maccabi activities," says coach
Jesse Polan of Franklin.
16& Under Girls Soccer
"The girls played their hearts out
and had a wonderful experience," says
coach Stuart Bass of West Bloomfield.
"The bronze medal was well deserved.
The girls will remember the Maccabi
games for the Judaism, socialism and
athleticism."
Detroit began the tournament with a 2-
5 record during the preliminary rounds.
The team came back with a 5-1 victory
over Pittsburgh to win the bronze medal.
Keren Stiebel played an outstanding goal
during the game.
Philadelphia
16 & Under Volleyball
In the preliminary rounds, Detroit
earned the second seed by defeating
Cincinnati four times and Venezuela
and Philadelphia three times each.
Detroit defeated Philadelphia in the
play-offs and moved on to play the
experienced Chicago team in the gold
medal round. Led by Julie Hack,
Rochelle Ravitsky and Alex Herman,
the Detroit girls played phenomenal
volleyball, but lost to Chicago 2-0 and
earned the silver medal. Stephanie
Rosenbloom, Nicki Milgrom, Sarah
Sallen, Sandra Berman and Tara
Forman contributed their numerous
skills to the successful outcome.
16 Under Tennis
Detroit's Emily Jaffee, 14, and
Michael Kaufman, 14, each won gold
medals.
"They [the team] showed amazing
sportsmanship, team support, maturity
and most of all, never left the court
without a hand shake, a smile and a
mazel toy, which is so difficult when
you lose," says coach Carol Frankel of
West Bloomfield. "Even when the tem-
peratures soared, their matches delayed
by hours and their sites changed at the
last minute, each player smiled,
laughed and never complained."
16 er Under Track 6- Field
The Detroit team came away with 10
medals in the 15/16 category.
Amy Miller won the gold in the
5000-meter cross-country, the silver in
the 1600m run, the bronze in the
3200m run and a gold in the com-
bined sprint medley.
Lauren Sharkey also won a gold in
the sprint medley, along with a silver
in the 4x100 combined relay.
Aron Sandler won a silver in the
4x100 combined and a bronze in the
4x400 mixed.
Ari Stern won a gold in the 4x100
combined and Josh Hirshland won a
bronze in the 5000m cross country.
16 Under Softball
The Detroit team started off with a 19-
2 loss against Toronto, but came back
to defeat Poland 29-2 in the second
game. Cortney Bogorad, Alissa Kerner
and Avie Linden each had four hits.
The team was able to advance to the
playoffs with a victory in the final
game during the round robin. Amy
Berke hit a home run, while Michelle
Neff and Stefani Silberstein had key
hits. Brie Barnett and Lori Tapper also
made great catches in the field.
In the medal round, Toronto defeat-
ed Detroit 8-6, in a battle that was
undecided until the final inning. Avie
Linden pitched an excellent game and
Kyle Astrein and A.J. Roberts con-
tributed with ket hits.
Detroit won the bronze medal after
defeating Poland once again.

16 Under Swimming
The Detroit team came away with 20
individual medals and six relay medals
in the 13/14 events for the week.
On Monday Gabe Schubiner earned a
gold in the 100 individual medley and a
silver in the 100 backstroke, while Zack
DeVore won the gold in the 100 back and
a silver in the 100 freestyle. Brad Portnoy
won the bronze in the 100 IM. The
mixed 200-yard medley relay team came
away with the bronze. Team members
include Portnoy Shubiner, Amy Heimlich
and Haley Mitchell.
On Tuesday, DeVore led the way
with a gold in the 400 IM and a sil-
ver in the 100 fly. Schubiner won a
gold in the 200 back, Emily
Eubanks earned a silver in the 400
IM, back and Portnoy earned a
bronze in the 200 free. The boys
4x100 free relay, comprised of
Bowen Vernan, Portnoy, Schubiner
and DeVore, won the silver.
On Wednesday, DeVore once again
led the way with a silver in the 500 free
and a silver in the 200 IM. Other
