Alphabet Game. On the left-hand side
of a piece of paper, write each letter of
the alphabet. Then try and come up
with someone Jewish for each letter. For
example A - (S.Y.) Agnon, author. B -
(Leonard) Bernstein, composer-conduc-
tor. C - (Marc) Chagall, artist.
(Incidentally, Eduard E. Van Raalte
[1841-1921] was the minister of justice
in Rotterdam, Holland, in 1905.)

\W: Word

Here's a fun twist on a popular word
game, which also can help you learn a
bit of Hebrew. It can be played by
beginners and Hebrew scholars alike. All
you need is a Hebrew-English diction-
ary, paper and pencils. One person
selects a word in Hebrew — one he
thinks no one will kno.w — and asks
players to give their best shot at translat-
ing it. The winner can be the person
who comes up with the correct (or clos-
est) answer, or the person who offers the
most creative answer.

E"x"traordinary
If traditional education isn't for you,
you may have considered something
extraordinary, home schooling. Visit this
Web site, which includes an extensive
menu for Jewish home schoolers of all
kinds (there's one specifically for vegetar-
ians, another for Orthodox Jewish home
schoolers), to learn more:

:Yiddish
Years before anyone had heard of
night school, Jews throughout Russia
had organized "Sabbath and Evening
Schools" to teach Yiddish to younger
members of the community. The first
such schools were opened in the 1860s
in Zhitomer, Minsk, Berdichev and
Vilna and featured lectures given in
Yiddish covering such subjects as nature
and literature. Most of these schools
eventually were shut down by Russian
authorities.

ZigZag, Inc.
This company was founded in 1996
to produce Jewish software and find new
ways to teach Hebrew using computer
technology. In 1998, ZigZag signed an
agreement with the University of
Michigan's Language Resource Center to
create new kinds of online foreign lan-
guage exercises for students (the results
of which were presented by U-M in
1999). You can learn about ZigZag, and
play some of their online games includ-
ing "AlefBetGo" challenge and "The
Hanukkah House" at
