machine often serves as his
first recording of new
music.
The composer-banjo player, who
can get an idea for a melody at any
time, needs to put the music on tape
before the sounds quickly escape him,
so he calls his home and leaves the
melody as a message.
Some of that phoned-in music —
developed and expanded — will be
part of the show he's presenting with
his Flecktones at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug.
26, at the Royal Oak Theatre. Blues

singer-guitarist-composer Keb' Mo'
(Kevin Moore) will join the concert.
"We'll be performing some stuff
from the Outbound CD, but we're also
doing some newer music and some
stuff from the old recordings way
back," says Fleck, 41. "We have a lot
of fun playing with Keb' Mo' (a two-
time Grammy winner in the contem-
porary blues category). Sometimes,
he'll come our and sing a song with
us, and sometimes I'll get on stage and
play a tune with him.
"By the time we're in Michigan,
we'll have done 10 or 12 shows with
him. He's very much of a blues singer
with a great, funk group :hat's very
different from our band. We're much
