invites the community to attend the

theater. It was some show."
Felt good? About what? Some show,
indeed.

No Educational Value

There are those who argue that movies
like Schindler's List "educate" millions
who otherwise would not know any-
thing about that morbid history.
But "educate" must be interpreted in
the broadest terms. People do not go to
a Saturday night movie to be educated.
They go to be entertained; and, further,
many still understand that Schindlers
List was produced in Hollywood — the
land of make-believe.
Moreover, Hollywood "teaches" some
very distorted history.
Consider what movie director Oliver
Stone did with the assassination of
John F. Kennedy. He produced a movie
implying a conspiracy by President
Johnson; and much of this generation,
unfortunately assumes this is fact.
But what about all those people who
leave the theater crying? That shows
they were moved, cared, right?
Not necessarily. Steve Spielberg had
them crying as well with E. T. The
Extra-Terrestrial and millions cried
watching Lassie movies. So what?
As a Brandeis University student
observed at the time, "I cried my eyes
out watching Sdchindlers List but then I
realized my emotions really meant noth-
ing. I frequently am moved to tears by
movies and television. It was "artificial."
Hollywood is very adept at manipu-
lating emotions. It has the ability to
do that with any subject and an audi-
ence's reaction to such manipulation is
hardly meaningful.
Indeed, these emotions last almost
as long as the dinner at the local pizze-
ria following the movie.
Those who packed the movie houses
for Schindler's List would not take the
time to hear the real stories on videos
from survivors as a Holocaust muse-
urn. Such accounts should move them
to tears, but they probably would be
described as boring.
It's time to express our outrage at a
Mel Brooks production such as The
Producers on the Holocaust. Let
Spielberg pursue Oscars on other sub-
jects. He must understand there is lit-
tle to be proud of in winning a prize
for the "best movie" which takes its
place among crime thrilled, cowboy
movies and musicals.
Instead of filling movie and
Broadway theaters to see these produc-
tions, it would be more respectful and
meaningful to ignore these "works" in
honor of the Six Million.
